I’m not sure how to describe what it was like being in Chicago Monday night, but I will do my best. I headed to the Windy City to (possibly…hopefully) photograph the Pirates clinching their first playoff berth in more than twenty years. I had heard through a source
that the team had ordered a dozen cases of champagne for the celebration. I’ll spare all of the travel details and start near the end. One out away from victory, With Pittsburgh leading 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and a runner on first, Chicago’s Ryan Sweeney blooped a single into right field. Nate Schierholtz attempted to score after the ball was bobbled by rightfielder Marlon Byrd. A play at the plate followed, and Pirates catcher Russell Martin blocked the plate and tagged Schierholtz to save the victory, holding the ball over his head in his victory formation.

Madness ensued, as a partial playoff celebration began on the field. The Pirates still needed the Nationals to lose to clinch the spot. They were losing in the ninth inning, 4-3. Players and coaches ran through the dark, narrow hallways of Wrigley Field and up the stairs to their clubhouse. Aside from the Root Sports crew and Pirates team photographer Dave Arrigo, the rest of us in the media were held right outside of the locker room door until we were given clearance to enter. A few of us were checking the score of the game on our phones and relaying back to the other reporters and photographers. We knew there were two outs in the ninth. We waited and waited. The booming chants of “Let’s go Bucs” from the Pirates fans in the concourse below added to the drama.

The quiet tension was shattered by the euphoric screams from the other side of the door. The Nationals had lost, apparently, and what sounded like the wildest frat party in history was happening a few feet away, but I could only stare at the clubhouse door. Minutes, seeming like weeks, went by and the door was still closed. All I could imagine was the scene in there and all of the moments and photographs waiting to be made, but all I saw was a big white door in my face. An impatient reporter eventually opened the door to check, and someone from the team told us to wait a few more seconds. The door was open, and my first sight was rookie pitcher Gerrit Cole laughing like a twelve year old spraying champagne. We were allowed in and it was all a blur until I looked at the photographs.

The only way I can describe it was sheer happiness. Hugs. Tears. Laughter. There was such a sense of joy, as well as relief. Twenty years of losing with do that to a team. But that time is over. Pittsburgh native Neil Walker hugged everyone he saw while A.J. Burnett was doused by his teammates with a beer shower over his head. Andrew McCutchen had the biggest smile I saw and Pirates traveling secretary Greg Johnson was hunted down and doused with beer by the entire team.

Nights like that do not happen often and I was grateful to have witnessed it.

I was completely humbled and honored to have a photograph that I captured used by Sports Illustrated as a two page spread in a story about Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby in this weeks issue. Although I have been published in SI previously, getting a two page photograph in the magazine is a goal that I set for myself every year. For the first time in my career, I can cross that goal off of my list! The photograph was taken during the Penguins victory over the Boston Bruins at the CONSOL Energy Center on March 17th, 2013. -Vincent

The Pittsburgh Steelers traveled to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania last Thursday night to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in their first preseason game in 2012. Preseason football often produces little in the way of drama and storylines, but this night proved to be remarkably different.

Garrett Reid, the son of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid passed away at the age of 28 last week, and Reid made his return to the sidelines Thursday. The Eagles paid tribute to Garrett before the national anthem, and Reid, accompanied by quarterback Michael Vick, took in the emotional ceremony near midfield. In addition, the Steelers unveiled their new look offense under offensive coordinator Todd Haley, and the first half had a different feel than previous preseason games. Here is a collection of my favorites from the game.

Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu was finishing up his drills at the end of practice when he spotted his two sons looking on. Polamalu’s face lit up as they sprinted towards their father and he lifted each one with a big bear hug and a kiss.

March Madness invaded the Consol Energy Center last week, with four NCAA Second Round games on Thursday and two more on Saturday at the Consol Energy Center. The crowd was the largest to ever watch basketball in Pittsburgh, and it was a wild weekend which saw Ohio State and Syracuse move on to the Sweet Sixteen and leaving six teams left heartbroken. That included UNC-Asheville, who nearly pulled off an upset of Syracuse, which would have made history as the only #16 seed to ever defeat a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Here are some of my favorites from the weekend!

“What is the coolest assignment you’ve ever shot?”

That is one of the most common questions Elizabeth and I are asked regarding our careers. The answer has changed often for both of us. I tend to look back on the historic sporting events that I’ve been on the sidelines for, Elizabeth is always attached to the more intimate personal projects that she had worked on. For the first time, we might both have the same answer. Elizabeth and I were contracted for a shoot in Paradise Valley, Arizona at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Spa & Resort. The assignment was for Athletes for Hope, a non-profit by an elite group of highly philanthropic professional athletes, including Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong and Andre Agassi, who are dedicated to achieving excellence through their charitable work.

The athletes would spend the weekend giving philanthropic chats and participating in sports with a group who donated to Athletes for Hope. As part of a phenomenal team of photographers, consisting of Annie O’Neill, Nancy Andrews Lynn Johnson, Josh Franzos and Karen Ballard along with Elizabeth and I, we spent three days documenting the project, which included a tennis match with Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, cycling with Lance Armstrong, a fantasy baseball trip to the Cincinnati Reds Spring Training, 18 holes of golf and a tutorial with Annika Sorenstam. It concluded with an unforgettable 70th birthday party for Muhammad Ali.
