Have you ever seen the movie “A Christmas Story”? Actually, that’s a silly question seeing that it annually shown on a 24 hour cycle on TBS. Anyway, do you remember the scene where the mom is getting the little boy dressed for school in the cold and it takes about three years to get him ready? I am here to announce that it was no exaggeration. This was our first sledding trip of the year and we were exhausted before we left the house. Once we got to South Park, it was nothing but laughs, cold fingers and more laughs. And this was just on the tiny hill. Elizabeth got into the act by somehow managing to take out both of our children (see the second photograph). Even though they both got the occasional mouthful of snow, they were having the time of their lives AND they got hot chocolate with marshmallows when we got home.

It is amazing what lengths a three-year-old will go to for the chance to play with bubbles in the sink. We notice that he was being quiet for a few minutes, so we knew something had to be up. Knowing he couldn’t reach the sink by conventional methods, he took a different route. He pushed the stool over and covered the interior of the sink with hand soap prior to emptying the water like a fire hydrant and balancing himself with one toe! This was how we found him when we entered the bathroom.

Christmas morning with a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old bot is magical and thrilling, to say the least. Fortunately, they are not at the point where they are up at 5:30 jumping on the bed anxiously awaiting Christmas presents, but we can tell it is on it’s way soon! Grandma and Grandpa from New York were here for all of the fun as they ripped apart the wrapping paper and played with all of their toys. We moved into our new home in July, and Grandma and Grandpa helped us put together their new room, which they saw for the first time Christmas morning! (Pictures three and four) They busted through the wrapping covering the doorway, which was such a wonderful moment! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and we wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year!

Family Friday – The Reprimand

As parents, we’d love to say that everything is rainbows and unicorns and we all behave perfectly all of the time. There are times, believe it or not, that a three year old will act like, well, a three year old. Which means throwing the occasional tantrum. Or spitting their food out. Maybe it means crying for a reason that no one can figure out. On this day, taking the Long Island Railroad after the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York (see our last Family Friday), this little cuddly monster decided to throw one of his toys. Elizabeth, in a split second, squeezed his little cheeks to let him know that wasn’t allowed, and I grabbed on of my favorite photographs of our youngest son!

We spent Thanksgiving with our family in New York and took the kids to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time! I’m not sure what was more of a thrill for them though, the parade or riding the subway, which is always their favorite. We had an awesome time and stuffed ourselves later that evening with great friends and family out on Long Island. Here are a few highlights from the day!

The first glimpse of Kermit The Frog popping out from behind the high rise on 80th street near Central Park was one of their favorite moments.

Snoopy, another favorite, wowed the chilly and cramped crowd, some of which waited for hours to keep their spot near the parade route. We were not some of those that waited that long!

Now, I know Turkey and Stuffing are traditional cuisine for Thanksgiving Day, but a hot dog and pretzel can make any grumpy 3-year-old happy.

Family Friday | Light Up Night

When we last left off Family Friday, we were at the train museum in Gibsonia. On our way home that night, we remembered that it was Light Up Night 2010 in Pittsburgh. It was the 50th anniversary of the celebration, so it was a pretty big deal. With the fireworks going off around 9:45, we figured we might be able to catch a glimpse of them during the drive. We got more than a glimpse! We lucked out with our timing, and pulled up a block from the Warhol Bridge, only minutes before the show started. We parked, no one gave us a hard time, and we had a front row seat ( well, not really a seat) for the festivities. The fireworks were spectacular, the kids loved it and we had a wonderful night!
